Westhaven Retreat, Golden Bay
14 12 7
Set in one of New Zealand's most spectacular coastal locations, on the northwest tip of the South Island you will find this trophy waterfront property. Spanning 329 hectares (813 acres) in four titles the stunning peninsula with over eight kilometres of water frontage can be explored by boat or land. This truly is an unsurpassed natural wilderness sanctuary.

This property with its secluded private beaches of golden sand, incredible ancient rock formations, and the second largest Nikau Palm forest in New Zealand borders a protected marine and wildlife reserve and the iconic Kahurangi National Park (New Zealand’s second largest national park). These are just a few of the key elements of this exceptional property.

The tradition of pastoral farming at the South Head farm has existed for almost a century and continues with the grazing of sheep, cattle and llamas. The farm boasts two working cattle and sheep yards, holding and shearing facilities and a 345 square metre implement shed. This large shed can also be utilised as a helicopter hangar.

The main residence on the property is Westhaven Retreat, an extraordinary building of 2,732 square metres designed to harmonise with its environment, offering luxury accommodation, is positioned to command views across the serene, forest-edged Whanganui inlet. Every room of the building is filled with the ever-changing view of Westhaven Bay and Kahurangi National Park. Featuring solid timber floors of teak and Tasmanian oak, plus 100 tonnes of hand-split Otago schist covering foyers, patios and entranceways. All ceilings and interior joinery are made from recycled rimu and teak.

The Luxury Lodge has been built to focus on a low carbon footprint and economic sustainability. Finished in 2013, it has been in operation for five years, with ever growing interest of guests worldwide. Visitors come not only for the spectacular views and pure natural surroundings, but also mostly for the complete and total privacy of this peninsula! Five guest rooms each with their own balcony and two spacious Suites with large Jacuzzi bath. Every luxury has been accounted for with the en-suite bathrooms featuring granite topped vanities and a hydro-jet shower.

The facilities include a hydrotherapy spa, massage room, infrared sauna and 24 metre (78.74 foot) long heated swimming pool. Above the pool in the mezzanine space is a large function area with birds-eye views - the perfect place for conferences, seminars, yoga and meditation workshops.

Other facilities in the retreat include a ‘Head Chef’ kitchen, luxurious staff quarters with lounge, bathroom, kitchen, laundry and three bedrooms, one master suite with roof-glazed balcony, and one manager’s suite. Garaging caters for six cars, and a separate workshop garage is complete with inspection pit.

There is an additional 102 square metre self-catering holiday house with a lounge, kitchen, two bedrooms, bathroom and garage.

The Westhaven Peninsula has been in the family for more than twenty seven years and much care has been put into preservation and conservation of Native plants, forests and it’s unique Wildlife. While thousands of valuable trees have been planted the kiwi population is steadily growing. The property is well known and loved for its sustainable lifestyle of hunting for wild deer and boar whilst the coastline and ocean provide exceptional fishing.

The Whanganui inlet, lying south of Farewell spit, between Golden Bay and the South Island's West Coast, is one of New Zealand's largest and best-preserved tidal estuaries. The lush coastal forest of Kahurangi National Park fringes this body of water.

Twenty years ago, the Westhaven Wildlife management reserve and the Westhaven Marine Reserve were created to protect this important conservation area. Ancient indigenous trees including kahikatea, pukatea, rata, beech, rimu and nikau palm endure here. Eelgrass beds, salt marshes, tidal wetlands, dunes, cliffs, islands, rock platforms and underwater reefs are all found at Westhaven and is an important habitat for a variety of species of wading birds and fish including snapper, abalone and whitebait.
